This artwork was created following a first visit to the Yorkshire Coast at Filey, Scarborough and Whitby. The coastline, rugged and seeped in geological history, provided deep inspiration for the Yorkshire Coast paintings.
Using a range of materials, the ephemeral nature and continual evolution of the coastline is evoked in this painting, in contrast to Yorkshire Coast No.1, which uses paint alone. The wide canvas offers a panoramic view which carries depth of paint and pattern from the paper, which is layered over the paint to give glimpses of what lies beneath. The coastline itself provides myriad opportunities for exploration of all kinds and the painting tries to reflect this sense of hidden treasures beneath the surface.
