This painting came as a result of a long visit to the Warwickshire countryside, where I came upon an array of beautiful crisp apples lying underneath an apple tree, unpicked and at different stages of decay and putrefaction. The smell of over-ripe apples was intensely strong and the sensation of wasps circling round was quite unbearable. It was quite in contrast to the appeal of the shiny freshly fallen apples.
Loosely painted, reflective and attractive, this painting grabs instantaneous attention, like the apples did under the tree for me.
