STUDY VISITS
The two travel awards above funded an extended study trip to Japan, where I studied the design of small spaces, delivering a presentation at CUBE Gallery after the trip. During my studies I also undertook the following study trips:
Amsterdam 2005 – This trip inspired the development of an Amsterdam Canal House design in year 1 at MSA.
Barcelona 2006 – A site in Barcelona acted as the starting for my Sculpted Landscape artworks. Visits to the Parc Diagonal Mar & Igualada cemetery, by Enric Miralles, as well as the Henri Moore sculptures in the city gallery, were highlights of this trip.
London 2006, 2008, 2009 – Regular visits to London formed part of my cultural education, both in terms of seeing the architecture of London and visiting exhibitions, such as the Zaha Hadid Design Museum Exhibition and the Cities exhibition at the Tate Modern.
Japan 2007 – The Japan trip was a culmination of research into density and how lessons can be learnt from countries where density is high. A presentation, movie & sketchbooks charted our observations made during the visit.
Iceland 2007 – The city & how we navigate it were key influences on investigations of city spaces.
Austria 2008 – This trip focussed on a series of visits to Peter Zumthor’s Kunsthaus in Bregenz to investigate the technical strategies employed to create an environmentally responsible building within the public realm. In this exhibition I was fortunate to see some inspirational work of Maurizio Catelan.
