Yorkshire Coast No.3

by Emily Pitts on September 23, 2010

in Inspired by..., Latest For Sale, News

  • Acrylic on box canvas
  • 152.5cm x 40.7cm

This particular artwork was inspired by a visit to Filey and by a fossil hunting trip onto the beach during damp weather, with the grey-blue sea and heavy sky casting a damp pall over the landscape and the cliffs.  The cliffs were unable to disguise the many shades, shapes and formations of rocks and detritus lying within the compacted layers.

Filey Coast No.1

by Emily Pitts on September 23, 2010

in Inspired by..., Latest For Sale

  • Acrylic on box canvas
  • 76.2cm x 50.8cm

A beautiful, calming and tranquil artwork, evoking the nature of the Filey coastline just as a rainstorm starts coming in off the sea.  The paint rises up off the canvas along the line of the sea – a powerful, foreboding and impenetrable mass.

I Can’t get you out of my Head

by Emily Pitts on September 23, 2010

in Latest For Sale, Love & Lust, Provocative

  • Acrylic medium, hair & glue on box canvas
  • 61cm x 30.5cm

This new work uses real hair, sewn into the canvas in patterns that create the words ‘ I can’t get you out of my head’.  The hair is both appealing in the shapes that it creates, swirling and twirling like an ornate typeface, but at the same time repugnant and repellant when you get up close and see each stray strand wild and free – wafting in the breeze.

Our Green Land

by Emily Pitts on September 23, 2010

in Inspired by..., Latest For Sale, News

  • Acrylic on box canvas
  • 61cm x 30.5cm

This work was inspired by travel through the Yorkshire countryside with its striking greenness reflected deeply in rivers and streams along the journey.  The paint is applied generously giving a three dimensional edge to the piece and encouraging the viewer to come closer and become more intimately involved in the work.

The Seeds are Spreading

by Emily Pitts on September 20, 2010

in All That Glitters, Latest For Sale

  • Acrylic, leather and glitter on box canvas 2010
  • 76.2cm x 50.8cm

This work is inspired by my love of our natural world and my investigations into conflicts in our relationship with our environment. Seeds from non-indigenous species often threaten our native plants, borne across miles of land and along huge lengths of our waterways in the air and on insects and animals. As we move from place to place, our lives becoming ever more transient, this has a knock on impact on the places around us. In this work the seeds are thrown up into the air and appear to be suspended – at the mercy of chaotic and unpredictable forces. In a sense it questions what actual power we have to effect change, with seemingly insurmountable external forces acting of their own accord. The picture alludes also to population explosion and how the outcome is almost impossible to predict and even less easy to control or organise – one puff of wind and the direction has changed again.

Beneath the Poppies No. 1

by Emily Pitts on September 20, 2010

in All That Glitters, Latest For Sale

SOLD

  • Acrylic, string, leather off-cuts and glitter on canvas 2010
  • 50.8cm x 50.8cm

Layers of paint and off cuts of leather form the basis of the “All That Glitters..” Collection. The series investigates things going on below the surface, in relation to ecology & nature, and our place within that. The work refers to nature’s capability of renewing and re-shaping itself to adapt to the effects of human activity and in response to our treatment of the natural world. Fleeting elements come through from underneath the top layer of paint, indistinguishable but nevertheless asserting their mark. Covering the whole piece is a layer of glinting glitter, like a piece of cellophane packaging, creating a beautiful sheen and deflecting all but attentive eyes from what lies below.

Untitled (I Just Love You)

by Emily Pitts on September 20, 2010

in Latest For Sale, Love & Lust

  • Acrylic on canvas
  • 91.5cm x 152.5cm

The production of this canvas was inspired by my visit to Manchester Pride’s Out in the city event and the discussion surrounding the development of art and readings of art alongside the opening up of freedom of expression for gay people. The colour of the canvas makes reference to Derek Jarman’s work ‘Queer’, which is housed at Manchester’s City Art Gallery, offering a counterpoint to the male dominated discourse on sexuality which prevails in many public institutions. The multitude of shades of colour and the delicate intersperses of rainbow colours brings more subtlety to the work, indicating a link between homosexual love and the words below, but perhaps acknowledging the spectrum of difference within the lesbian and gay community itself – sexuality cannot be pigeon-holed in the way that society would like it to be.

I have a great interest in words and how we use them. Words fail to fully and wholly describe our exact meanings, leading to mis-communication and confusion. In the case of this work the word ‘just’ brings into question the meaning of the statement as a whole. Taken out of context and away from verbal and body language the statement languishes at the bottom of the sheet, as if the thought has been dragged out of the expressor; the word ‘just’ somehow diminishing the statement to a disposable romantic narrative. The way that the words are scrawled nonchalantly across the canvas, gouging out the paint, hints at a kind of carelessness or reticence, alluding to the difficulties involved in expressions of love.

‘I Loved You’ (Triptych)

by Emily Pitts on September 16, 2010

in Latest For Sale, Provocative

  • Acrylic and wire on Box canvas
  • 3 canvas’: 61cm x 30.5cm each

New gorgeous tactile artworks; three beautifully evocative individual pieces with sensual qualities and a vibrant presence.  The work refers the love between two women and the explosive and powerful emotions that arise in the sexual part of that relationship.  The works are full of emotional charge and present the viewer with intimate subject matter that both enchants, with its deep gouges of paint, and repels, with its immediacy.

Filey Coast No. 2

by Emily Pitts on September 16, 2010

in Inspired by..., Latest For Sale

  • Acrylic on box canvas
  • 61cm x 30.5cm
This canvas is smaller in scale to the other Yorkshire Coast and Filey images and projects the austerity and sombre seascape during inclement weather at Filey.  The sky hangs heavy and atmospheric in contrast to the texture of the sandy shore.  Acrylic paint is used roughly to evoke the constant movement, unpredictability and power of the sea, particularly during storms.  This coastline is amongst the most beautiful I have visited and this painting is somewhat an ode to that.
