Yorkshire Coast No.1

SOLD

  • Acrylic on box canvas
  • 152.5cm x 40.7cm

This horizontally elongated canvas promotes the essence of the Yorkshire coast, with its beautiful geological history emblazoned across the cliffs for miles.  Layer upon layer of sediment contains precious fossils, hunted by many.

The use of paint gives this painting a tactile quality and brings the viewer in close, to touch, feel and experience the work, however in doing this the nature of the painting changes.  The ephemeral nature of our landscapes is evoked through swift paint application that sweeps across the canvas.  The streaks move across the canvas over layers of thick textured paint, in bright orange-red hues, and rise up towards the clear blue sky.

The Apple I Chose

by Emily Pitts on September 16, 2010

SOLD

  • Acrylic on box canvas
  • 50.8cm x 50.8cm

This painting came as a result of a long visit to the Warwickshire countryside, where I came upon an array of beautiful crisp apples lying underneath an apple tree, unpicked and at different stages of decay and putrefaction.  The smell of over-ripe apples was intensely strong and the sensation of wasps circling round was quite unbearable.  It was quite in contrast to the appeal of the shiny freshly fallen apples.

Loosely painted, reflective and attractive, this painting grabs instantaneous attention, like the apples did under the tree for me.

Yorkshire Coast No.2

by Emily Pitts on September 16, 2010

in Inspired by..., Latest For Sale

SOLD

  • Acrylic, paper, leather and varnish on box canvas
  • 1.52cm x 40.7 cm

This artwork was created following a first visit to the Yorkshire Coast at Filey, Scarborough and Whitby.  The coastline, rugged and seeped in geological history, provided deep inspiration for the Yorkshire Coast paintings.

Using a range of materials, the ephemeral nature and continual evolution of the coastline is evoked in this painting, in contrast to Yorkshire Coast No.1, which uses paint alone.  The wide canvas offers a panoramic view which carries depth of paint and pattern from the paper, which is layered over the paint to give glimpses of what lies beneath.  The coastline itself provides myriad opportunities for exploration of all kinds and the painting tries to reflect this sense of hidden treasures beneath the surface.

Filey Blue Sky

  • Acrylic on box canvas
  • 76.2cm x 50.8cm

During a week-long visit to the Yorkshire Coast each day presented a whole new experience, from volatile and moody skies, to instantaneous downpours to this – open, expansive blue skies stretching to infinity.  Associated with this is the idea of our infinitesimal existence within the wide openness that is space stretched out in front of us as a challenge to our tiny lives.  The realisation of this brings into focus the important things that we hold dear – different things for each of us.
